How to Exchange Money at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Thailand

Getting a good currency exchange rate is important when traveling. Many people don't put much thought in to it, but small amounts add up fast when you're exchanging larger sums or traveling a lot.

If you're arriving at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) airport in Bangkok, Thailand - here's a tip. Ignore the dozens of currency exchange booths located all over the airport. You see them in the halls after you walk off the plane, in the baggage claim area, in the departure area, etc. The more conveniently located, the worse their exchange rates are. From what I have seen, they can be around 2 baht per 1 USD worse than the proper exchange rate. If asked, they won't tell you that there are cheaper rates nearby!

So ignore all these money exchangers and take the escalator to the lowest level of the airport. Just follow the signs for the Airport Rail Link train. There are several exchange rate booths down there that have significantly better rates. All the currency exchange booths are near each other so just take a quick walk around and pick the one with the best rate!

To demonstrate the importance of getting good exchange rates, here is a real-life example. In Dec of 2016, I was at the airport in Bangkok and the money exchange booths upstairs were offering 33.60 Baht per 1 USD. This seemed fine at the time, but downstairs near the Rail Link the exchange rate was 35.60 Baht per 1 USD. This doesn't sound like a big difference since 2 baht is only worth about 6 cents, but I was exchanging $500 USD, so that was a difference of around $28 USD! Not bad for a 3 minute walk.
